Suya, Other Red Meat Consumption Leads To Fibroids - Physician

Dr Femi Ajayi, a physician with the Calvary Medical Centre, Ayobo, Lagos, says high consumption of red meat can lead to formation of fibroid in women. Ajayi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday

that consumption of red meat could increase the estrogen level in the body which could allow the growth of fibroid.

“Red meat is to be avoided as it promotes the growth of fibroid in women, “he advised.

According to Ajayi, fibroid is a tumour that forms on the wall of a woman’s womb.

He said that it occurred in women between the ages of 35 and 55.

“Fibroid occurs in women in their childbearing stage, and does not have symptoms except if the fibroid is very large.”

He said that fibroid could lead to miscarriages in pregnancy, painful sex, painful menstruation and heavy menses.

According to him, a change in the diet of a fibroid patient can make fibroid to shrink.
“There are other certain foods to be avoided when you suffer from fibroid in order to prevent it from getting bigger.

“Reduce consumption of foods such as dairy products, alcohol, fast food, egg, sugary food, salted food, canned food, and saturated fat as they can increase the hormone that can feed the fibroid.

“Eat foods such as beans, fruits, vegetables, fish and plenty of drinks which help in detoxification,” he said.

The physician said that stress and lack of exercise could cause fibroid as they could increase a woman’s estrogen level.

“Relief from stress on a daily basis and enough exercise will shrink fibroid tumour as well as prevent more from growing.”

Ajayi added that fibroid would become smaller or disappear after menopause.

He said that fibroid varies in sizes, and that surgery might be necessary to remove it if very large.
